Currency

National russian currency is russian rouble (RUR, RUB, ₽, руб.). There are 100 kopecks in the rouble, and these come in small coins that are worth one, five, 10 and 50 kopecks. Roubles are issued in coins in amounts of one, two, five and 10 roubles. Banknotes come in values of 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 roubles. Small stores, kiosks and many other vendors have difficulty changing large notes, so save those little ones.

CBR.RU rates:

  • $ 1 = 64.3455
  • € 1 = 71.0503

Currency exchange services are offered in any bank and in most hotels. The most popular currencies are US dollar ($) and Euro (€).

US dollars and euros are easy to change around St. Petersburg, but other currencies will undoubtedly cause more hassle than they are worth. When you visit the exchange office, be prepared to show your passport. An original passport (not a copy) is required for the majority of exchange offices.

Tip: Various money exchange offices attract "Independent dealers" touting their own rate. The chances are they are profession con artists that have an array of tricks to extract cash from you. The saving if legitimate is minimal. Avoid them.

ATMs

ATMs linked to international networks such as AmEx, Cirrus, Eurocard, MasterCard and Visa are common throughout St. Petersburg. Look for the sign «Банкомат». Using a credit or debit card, you can always obtain roubles.

Credit cards

Credit cards, especially Visa and MasterCard, widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and stores. You can also use your credit card to get a cash advance at most major banks in St. Petersburg.
